Meet Cascara: The Magical Coffee Fruit (and your new favorite drink)

We are thrilled partner with Huskwell to offer iced cascara tea on our drink menu!

For the uninitiated, here's a closer look at what cascara is and why we're so excited to bring this magical and delightful beverage to Charleston!

Cascara is the husk of our favorite fruit, the coffee cherry. Literally meaning “peel” or “skin” in Spanish, cascara is collected and often tossed out after the seeds (coffee beans!) are removed from the fruit. We think it’s time to change this and reap the benefits of this oft-ignored but extra-special rind. With the proper drying technique and care, this humble husk can transform from a farming byproduct into a superfruit with super potential.

It’s estimated that nearly 40% of the coffee fruit is wasted in coffee production. Imagine 40% of a product you’ve worked tirelessly to create just winding up as waste. Cascara changes that.

By using the coffee husks, we can create a powerfully positive chain reaction. Not only does cascara reduce waste, it enables coffee producers to monetize more of their coffee harvest, investing that money back into quality farming practices.

Not only is cascara an incredibly sustainable crop, it's super healthy! Cascara is packed with polyphenols and antioxidants (more than superfoods like blueberries and pomegranates!) that can help with immunity, stress, sleep, focus, and digestion. When brewed, cascara has a slightly sweet and refreshingly tart flavor with notes of hibiscus, molasses, and dried fruit. And with less than a quarter of the caffeine content of coffee, it’s a healthy pick-me-up for any time of day.
